Tom is a domestic cat and one of the two title characters in the Tom and Jerry animated franchise, created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1940. First appearing in the short Puss Gets the Boot under the name Jasper, the character was renamed Tom following a studio contest won by animator John Carr. He is defined by his relentless pursuit of the mouse Jerry, a rivalry that rarely resolves in his favor. Tom and Jerry comics have been published since the early 1940s, adapting the characters for print.
