Pif
Description
Pif is a French comics character created by Jose Cabrero Arnal in 1948 for the daily newspaper L'Humanite. He is an anthropomorphic dog and the title character of the long-running children's magazine Pif Gadget.
Pif is a friendly, good-natured dog whose adventures often center on his comedic rivalry with Hercules, a cat. The strip combines slapstick humor with simple moral lessons. Pif became so popular in the pages of the children's newspaper Vaillant that the publication was eventually renamed in his honor.
In 1969, the magazine relaunched as Pif Gadget, with each issue including a toy or novelty item alongside the comics. The magazine reached a record print run of one million copies, a record for a European comic that stood for decades. Pif Gadget ran from 1969 to 1993, with a brief revival from 2004 to 2009. The character remains a significant figure in the history of French children's comics.
