Casper the Friendly Ghost is a character created by Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo in the late 1930s, first appearing in comics published by St. John Publications in 1949. Harvey Comics began publishing Casper stories in 1952 and purchased the rights to the character in 1959, making him its flagship property. Unlike most fictional ghosts, Casper actively seeks friendship with humans rather than frightening them. Harvey Comics developed an extensive supporting cast around the character, including Wendy the Good Little Witch and the Ghostly Trio.
