Obelix
Description
Obelix is a Franco-Belgian comics character created by Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. He first appeared in the debut issue of Asterix the Gaul in the magazine Pilote in 1959.
Obelix is a large, rotund Gaul and Asterix's best friend. As an infant he fell into the village druid Getafix's cauldron of magic potion, giving him permanent superhuman strength. Because the effects never wore off, the druid refuses to let him drink any more potion, a source of ongoing disappointment for Obelix. He works as a menhir (standing stone) deliveryman and sculptor.
Despite his enormous size and strength, Obelix is sensitive and emotional, particularly about being called fat (he insists he is merely "well built"). He is inseparable from his tiny dog Dogmatix and has a fondness for wild boar, which he consumes in enormous quantities. His straightforward, childlike personality contrasts with Asterix's cleverness, making their partnership one of the most beloved duos in European comics. The Asterix series has sold over 400 million copies worldwide.
