Augustus Mutt is the tall, dim-witted racetrack gambler at the center of Mutt and Jeff, the pioneering American newspaper comic strip created by Bud Fisher in 1907. A chronic horse-race fanatic motivated by greed, Mutt's schemes inevitably unravel, often made worse by his diminutive companion Jeff. Their strip is widely regarded as one of the first successful daily newspaper comics in the United States and appeared across dozens of comic book compilations throughout the mid-twentieth century.
