Hippolyta is the queen of the Amazons and the mother of Wonder Woman in DC Comics, introduced in 1941. Ruling the island nation of Themyscira, she is a warrior of exceptional skill whose character draws on the Amazon queen of Greek mythology. Her relationship with Diana forms the emotional core of Wonder Woman's origin across multiple continuities, and she has at times donned the mantle of Wonder Woman herself and served with the Justice Society of America in stories set during World War II.
