Lone Wolf and Cub (1987)
First Comics brought Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima's samurai saga to English-language readers for the first time, publishing this run monthly from 1987 to 1991. Each square-bound, black-and-white issue reprints chapters from the original 1970s manga in prestige format.
Ogami Itto, a disgraced shogunate executioner turned masterless ronin, wanders feudal Japan as a hired assassin. He travels with his young son Daigoro, pushed along in a wooden cart rigged with hidden blades, while the Yagyu clan hunts them both.
Frank Miller supplied new covers and an introduction for the first twelve issues, and later issues carried covers from Bill Sienkiewicz, Matt Wagner, and Mike Ploog. First Comics folded in 1991 having published 45 of the planned issues, a fraction of the full story.
