Spectre
Description
The Spectre is a DC Comics character created by Jerry Siegel and Bernard Baily. He first appeared in More Fun Comics #52 (1940) as one of the most powerful entities in the DC Universe.
The Spectre is the embodiment of God's divine wrath, a cosmic force of vengeance bound to a human host. The most well-known host is Jim Corrigan, a murdered police detective whose spirit was denied entry to the afterlife and instead bonded with the Spectre to punish the wicked. Hal Jordan also served as the Spectre's host during the early 2000s, seeking redemption for his actions as Parallax.
The Spectre's power is virtually limitless. He can alter reality, manipulate matter and energy, grow to planetary scale, and inflict punishments that match the severity of the crimes he judges. His stories often grapple with the tension between divine justice and human mercy, as the host struggles to temper the entity's absolute, sometimes cruel, interpretation of punishment.
The Spectre is a founding member of the Justice Society of America and has been a recurring figure in DC's cosmic and supernatural storylines for over 80 years.
