Mitsuru Adachi
Biography
Mitsuru Adachi is a Japanese manga artist born in Isesaki, Gunma Prefecture. His older brother, Tsutomu Adachi, was also a manga artist. After moving to Tokyo in 1969 to assist manga artist Isami Ishii, he made his debut the following year with Kieta Bakuon.
Adachi became a household name with Touch, serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday from 1981 to 1986. The series blended high school romance with baseball and became one of the most popular manga of the 1980s. He continued in the same vein with H2 (1992-1999), Cross Game (2005-2010), and Mix (2012-2020), all published in Weekly Shonen Sunday. Cross Game received the 54th Shogakukan Manga Award in 2009.
His work has sold over 300 million copies worldwide. Adachi and fellow Shonen Sunday mainstay Rumiko Takahashi developed a well-known friendly rivalry during their years of simultaneous serialization in the magazine.
