Description
Written by John Layman with art by Rob Guillory, Chew is set in a world where chicken was banned following a bird flu outbreak that killed 23 million Americans. The prohibition turned the FDA into the most powerful law enforcement agency in the country, staffed with agents tracking food crimes from black market chicken rings to exotic animal trafficking.
Tony Chu is a cibopath who gets psychic impressions from anything he eats, reading the history of food and objects through taste. A bite of an apple tells him where it was grown and who handled it. The only thing Tony's ability does not work on is beets.
Recruited from the Philadelphia Police Department into the FDA's Special Crimes Division by senior agent Mason Savoy, Tony finds himself drawn into a conspiracy behind the chicken prohibition that runs deeper than any food crime. Tony's growing relationship with Amelia Mintz, a saboscrivner food critic who can write about food vividly enough that her readers can taste it, adds a personal dimension to the story.
Chew ran for 60 issues collected into twelve story arcs, winning two Eisner Awards and two Harvey Awards over its run.
