Description
Daredevil Comics was a Golden Age anthology from Lev Gleason Publications, running from 1941 to 1956 across 134 issues. The title launched with Daredevil Battles Hitler as its first issue, featuring Bart Hill, a young man who becomes a costumed adventurer of extraordinary athleticism. The series leaned into patriotic wartime themes, pitting Daredevil against Axis villains and a recurring antagonist known as The Claw. As the 1940s wore on, the book shifted away from its title hero and increasingly spotlighted the Little Wise Guys, a street gang of scrappy young characters whose comedic antics gradually took over the covers and much of the interior content. This shift mirrored broader postwar trends as superhero readership declined. Despite the reduced role of its title character, the series maintained consistent readership through the Little Wise Guys' popularity and remained one of Lev Gleason's flagship publications to the end of its run. The debut issue holds historical note for its direct wartime propaganda framing, a relatively rare example of a superhero launch built around a specific real-world conflict.
