Description
Vinland Saga is a historical manga series written and illustrated by Makoto Yukimura, serialized in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine. Set during the Viking Age of the eleventh century, it centers on Thorfinn, the son of Thors, a legendary warrior once counted among the elite Jomsviking mercenaries. When Thors is killed by the mercenary captain Askeladd during a sea voyage, Thorfinn spends his adolescence fighting in Askeladd's band as a hired blade, seeking single combat with the man responsible. Caught up in the Danish conquest of England, Thorfinn matures from a rage-consumed boy into someone who must confront what revenge has cost him. The narrative spans major arcs shifting from brutal Viking mercenary life to a philosophically grounded examination of pacifism and what it takes to build something worth living for. Prince Canute, heir to the Danish throne, is a key figure whose own transformation from sheltered royal to calculating king runs parallel to Thorfinn's arc. The series weaves historical figures including Sweyn Forkbeard and Leif Erikson into its cast alongside invented characters.
