Leiji Matsumoto
Biography
A Japanese manga artist whose space opera works helped define science fiction storytelling in the medium. He is best known for Galaxy Express 999 and Space Pirate Captain Harlock, both launched in 1977, and for his creative involvement with Space Battleship Yamato beginning in 1974. Galaxy Express 999 earned him the 1978 Shogakukan Manga Award. Matsumoto died in February 2023 at age 85.
