Alan Grant (1949-2022) was a Scottish comic book writer born in Bristol and raised in Scotland. After working briefly in banking, he joined DC Thomson (publisher of The Beano) at age 18, where he met future collaborator John Wagner. He later moved to London to work for IPC, eventually joining the staff of 2000 AD.
Grant and Wagner formed one of the most productive writing partnerships in British comics, co-writing Judge Dredd for much of the 1980s, including epic storylines like "The Apocalypse War." Their partnership led to writing Batman in Detective Comics from issue #583 (1988), largely with artist Norm Breyfogle. Grant went on to write Batman: Shadow of the Bat and co-created the characters Anarky, Victor Zsasz, the Ventriloquist, Jeremiah Arkham, and Amygdala.
Grant described himself as an anarchist, and the character Anarky was created as a vehicle for exploring those political ideas. He continued writing for 2000 AD and Judge Dredd Megazine until his final credit in 2019.
