Description
Phantom Road is a grindhouse horror series by writer Jeff Lemire and artist Gabriel Hernandez Walta, published by Image Comics beginning in 2023. Dom, a long-haul truck driver with a tragic past he cannot outrun, makes a fateful stop when he discovers Birdie, the lone survivor of a catastrophic highway crash. The two pull an artifact from the wreckage, a decision that transforms an ordinary midnight run into a desperate flight through a landscape where the rules of reality no longer apply. Hunted by impossible creatures and cut off from everything familiar, Dom and Birdie must navigate a world bent sideways by forces they cannot explain or control, relying on each other as their only constant in a surreal and threatening universe. Lemire and Walta previously collaborated on the Eisner Award-nominated Sentient, and Phantom Road showcases the same visual intensity and emotional precision, blending road-trip tension with body-horror spectacle and science-fiction strangeness. The series draws on classic trucking-noir atmosphere while pushing steadily into territory that defies easy genre classification.
