Teenager Mariposa Montiel vanished from her Chicago neighborhood years ago. She has come back with a wild story about serving as champion of Mayahuela, a magical jungle realm, and the only proof she carries is a single tiger-striped feather.

Her family is traumatized, the media treats her as a spectacle, and no one believes a word of it. Then a covert organization called N.O. Place reaches out. Led by a figure from the Land of Oz, the agency monitors worlds once dismissed as fiction, and Mari's battlefield experience makes her their newest operative. Her first mission: defend the real world from a creeping supernatural threat.
