Description
Amazing-Man Comics was published by Centaur Publications from September 1939 to January 1942, running for 22 issues numbered from #5 through #26. The title is best known for its lead character, John Aman, a young American raised from infancy by a secret council of wise men in the Himalayas. Trained to the absolute peak of human physical and mental capability, Aman returns to civilization as Amazing-Man, a superhero with extraordinary strength, agility, and a form of near-invulnerability. The character was created by Bill Everett, who went on to create the Sub-Mariner for Timely Comics, and Aman's origin drew on similar ideas about disciplined human potential reaching its outer limits. Historians have noted the character's influence on later creations including Charlton's Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt and Marvel's Iron Fist. The anthology also gave space to additional backup strips, with Mighty Man, a strongman hero, appearing as a notable secondary feature. The title is an early example of the mystic-martial-arts superhero archetype that would resurface repeatedly across later decades of American comics, making it a point of genuine historical interest despite its short run.
