Tite Kubo
Biography
Tite Kubo is a Japanese manga artist born in Fuchu, Aki District, Hiroshima Prefecture. He decided to become a manga artist in elementary school after reading Saint Seiya. His first one-shot, Ultra Unholy Hearted Machine, appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1996.
Kubo's first serialized manga, Zombiepowder, ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1999 to 2000. His second series, Bleach, debuted in the same magazine in 2001 and ran for 15 years, reaching 698 chapters across 74 collected volumes. The story centers on Ichigo Kurosaki, a high school student who gains the powers of a shinigami. Bleach received the Shogakukan Manga Award in 2004 and was adapted into an anime series that ran for 366 episodes.
Bleach has sold over 120 million copies worldwide. Kubo's visual style is noted for angular character designs, minimal background art, and dramatic panel compositions during fight sequences. Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama sent Kubo a letter of encouragement early in his career.
