Peyo
Biography
Pierre Culliford, known by the pen name Peyo, was a Belgian comics artist and writer born in Brussels in 1928. He began his professional career in the late 1940s and introduced his adventure series Johan and Peewit in Spirou magazine in the early 1950s. The Smurfs first appeared in that series in 1958 before spinning off into their own long-running comic and a globally successful animated television franchise. Peyo died in December 1992.
