Curt Swan
Biography
Curt Swan (1920-1996), born Douglas Curtis Swan in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was the definitive Superman artist of the Silver and Bronze Ages. Of Swedish descent (the family name was shortened from Svensson), Swan first pencilled Superman for Superman #51 (1948) and went on to draw approximately 1,140 stories in the Superman family of titles over nearly five decades.
Swan's clean, naturalistic style replaced Wayne Boring's earlier version of the character in the early 1960s and became the look most readers associated with Superman for three decades. He co-created supporting characters including Lucy Lane, Krypto the Superdog, Faora, and Superboy-Prime. Swan was released from the Superman titles in 1986 when DC rebooted the character under John Byrne.
Swan received an Inkpot Award in 1984 and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1997.
