Tony Strobl
Biography
Tony Strobl was an American comics artist and animator born in Northridge, California. He attended the Cleveland School of Art from 1933 to 1937, where fellow students included Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. After seeing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, he sought work at Walt Disney Studios and was hired in 1938.
Strobl animated on Fantasia, Dumbo, and Pinocchio before leaving the studio to serve in World War II. After the war he shifted to comics, joining Western Publishing in 1947. Starting with a Bucky Bug story in Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #100 in 1949, he became one of the most prolific Disney comics artists, drawing Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge, and other characters for decades.
Strobl illustrated stories written by Carl Barks after Barks retired from drawing in 1966. He also drew comics featuring Bugs Bunny and Woody Woodpecker. He worked for Western Publishing until 1968 and continued producing Disney comics through the Disney Studio Program until his retirement in 1987. He is considered to have drawn more Disney comic pages than any other artist.
