John Buscema
Biography
John Buscema (1927-2002), born Giovanni Natale Buscema in Brooklyn, New York, was one of Marvel Comics' most important artists during the company's rise in the 1960s and 1970s. The son of a barber, he grew up in Red Hook and studied at the High School of Music and Arts and Pratt Institute.
Buscema entered comics at Timely Comics (Marvel's predecessor) in 1948, left for advertising work in 1958, and returned to Marvel in 1966 at Stan Lee's invitation. He is best known for his runs on The Avengers, The Silver Surfer, and over 200 issues of Conan the Barbarian. He also drew long runs on Fantastic Four and Thor, and pencilled at least one issue of nearly every major Marvel title. His brother Sal Buscema was also a prolific Marvel artist.
Buscema was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame in 2024.
